My suburban back yard is host to a few winged friends. Sure they’re not like Buddie and Lovie my “pet cardinals” back in Tampa, but Austin has brought me a few new feathered creatures to watch.
Lately, a single hawk has been circling above our trees. Sometimes I see it on the branch between our house and the one behind us. He doesn’t seem to want to have eyes on him. So he doesn’t stay around very long once I’m outside.
I have a few tufted titmouse that have been pretty vocal as of late. Today I saw one sitting atop a sprinkler head trying to get a bit of water.
NOTE TO SELF: BUY SOME SORT OF BIRD BATH OR WATERING ELEMENT FOR THE BACK YARD THIS MONTH.
Lesser goldfinch – have seen only a few here and there since moving north. Sighting them has been quiet sporadic.
Our Carolina wrens have come back and now love to perch on the fence in front of the kitchen sink. One we named Petunia, I’m sure it’s only coincidence that she seems to watch me while I’m doing dishes. Unless wrens have x-ray vision I doubt she can see me through the reflective glass panes.
New cardinals! Lately there’s been a M&F pair of cardinals that have been chirping and visiting the yard, quite frequently. Maybe they’ve heard good stories about me through the cardinal grapevine. I need to find names for them soon.
OWLS… oh it’s almost owl time, seems during the summer they’re scarce, but once the weather cools off… I CAN’T WAIT! I love listening to them chatter at night, especially when they are sitting on top of the chimney, it echos and is so lovely!
Once it’s a bit cooler, maybe I can grab a few photos of these little beauties!
